How long does each therapy session take?

A session can range between 45 to 60 minutes depending on the child's age and needs.

  • Children under 7 years old: 45 minutes (30-40 minute consult with a 15-5 minute debrief with parents)

  • Children over 7 years old: 60 minutes  (45-55 minutes with the child and 15-5 minutes with parents)

Depending on parental involvement and your child's age, your child may opt for the full 60 minutes.

Do I have to inform my child's school?

You do not need to disclose your child's attendance to their school. Your privacy and confidentiality is of the utmost important. However, Rachel does work closely with various schools across Hong Kong and can be open with communication to a school counselor/psychologist or safeguarding officers if needed.

Do I take part in my child's sessions?

Technically, no. However, as parents/guardians, you play a vital role in the therapeutic process. Initial consultations are normally done between Rachel and the parents/guardians only. This is so that Rachel can gain a better understanding of your concerns, family, social and developmental history. It is also a great opportunity for you to get to know Rachel before introducing her to your child.

What will happen in my child's first session?

The first session with your child will be purely about rapport building. A good therapeutic relationship is important so that your child can feel safe, supported and comfortable. Henceforth, the first session is set up so that your child may get to know Rachel better as she aims to better understand your child, their symptoms and their perspective. Depending on your child's age, this session might also include playing games or worksheets.

To ensure your child is well informed they will be introduced to the concept of CBT, session layouts, confidentiality and parental involvement. Depending on your child's age, concern or personality, they may want varying degrees of parental involvement.

How frequent do the sessions have to be?

Most sessions run on a weekly basis. However, for more severe symptoms or concerns, sessions can run twice a week. The eventual goal of therapy is for your child to have gained all the skills they need to manage on their own. Henceforth, once improvement and stability is noted, Rachel and your child will work towards gradually reducing frequency of sessions to fortnightly, monthly and eventually, just occasional catch ups!
